The Cost to Change & Save a Life
Below is an estimate of the cost of the transplant surgery. Some of this data came from the United Network for Organ Sharing.

Estimated First Year Charge: $414,600

Estimated Transplant Surgery & Hospitalization Expense after insurance: Between the 3 health plans a majority of this cost will be covered.

Estimated Home Health care during recovery period after insurance - $9,000

Estimated Annual Follow-up Charge: $21,900

Following transplant, she will need several drugs, called immunosuppresives, to sustain her transplanted liver. The immunosuppressive medications may include Neoral, Cellcept, Prograf and Prednisone. The following are estimates and depend on the dosage and pharmacy used. Note that most health plans pay a percentage of medication costs, as described in the next section.

· Neoral or Prograf: Total monthly cost is approximately $1,500

· Cellcept: Total monthly cost is approximately $800 (required for approx. first three months only)

· Septra: Total monthly cost is approximately $7.50

· Prednisone: Total monthly cost is approximately $5.50

· Proton Pump Inhibitor: Total monthly cost is approximately $160 (required for approx. first 3 months only)

· Nystatin: Total monthly cost is approximately $172 (required for approx. first 2 months only)

· Valcyte: Total monthly cost is approximately $2,000 (required for approx. first 3-6 months only)

Non-medical expenses:

Liberty's mother will be on an unpaid Leave of Absence for 3 to 6 months to take care of Liberty until she is recovered and has built up her immune system so she can be around other people.

Estimated Living and Medical Insurance expenses for 6 months - $18,000
